Slovakian officials are pointing fingers at the increasing negativity and division in the country for creating an environment that led to an attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Speaking outside the hospital where Fico is receiving treatment, Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák urged for an end to the hate. He said, ‘We need to stop this right now. Hatred is never the answer.’
Clearly shaken and struggling to find the right words, Kaliňák emphasized the need for some people to reflect on their actions.
‘There’s no doubt this was a politically motivated attack. When people can’t accept election outcomes they don’t like, it can lead to terrible incidents like this,’ he added. Interior Minister Matúš Å utaj EÅ¡tok called for calm.
‘Everyone needs to take a step back – those condoning the attack and those seeking revenge. And I’m asking the media, too, to use their influence responsibly. Because, let’s face it, some of the hate has been fueled by certain voices in the media,’ he urged.”
