Kansask City, Mo. — Thursday night’s Baltimore Ravens loss by a toe left quarterback Lamar Jackson with just a headshake.
Jackson claimed he doesn’t think the authorities should have reversed Isaiah Likely’s last-second touchdown, leading to a devastating 27-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the season opener. Originally ruling Likely with both feet inbound in the rear of the end zone, Baltimore would have been in position to win with a 2-point convert; but, a replay check verified that the front of Likely’s right foot touched the white out-of-bounds line.
Jackson remarked, “I thought it was a touchdown.” “I still believe it is a touchdown.”
Though they nearly pulled off one of their most exciting comebacks, Jackson and the Ravens dropped to 1-5 versus Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Jackson stepped up into the pocket at the Kansas City 10-yard line five seconds remaining and ran in a loop before sending a throw to Likely in the rear of the end zone as time ran out.
probably jumped to grab the ball and descended with Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton draped on his back. To indicate touchdown, the referee raised both hands; Likely threw the ball in the air in celebration.
“The ref looked at me, I look at the ref, and when he signaled touchdown, I thought it was what it was,” Likely said. “then, naturally we were going to win the game.”
Baltimore would have been behind 27–26 with no time left should the touchdown have counted. Before the referees decided, the Ravens were ready to line up to try to win the game and go for two points.

Baltimore would have been behind 27–26 with no time left should the touchdown have counted. Before the referees decided, the Ravens were ready to line up to try to win the game and go for two points.
“The runner’s toe hit out of bounds,” Shawn Hochuli, the referee, declared. “That’s a passing that is unfinished. The game finishes now. Kansas City has earned.”
Andy Reid, the chiefs coach, claimed he didn’t see if Likely was inbounds clearly.
“The guys upstairs saw it, and so they knew he was out,” Reid remarked. “We were merely waiting after that.”
Most likely, who ended with career highs of nine catches and 111 yards, landed in the end zone two two plays earlier and seemed to have damaged his shoulder. Jackson then threw an incompletion to the end zone, and most likely returned to the field with almost the biggest touchdown of his three-year career.
Should the Ravens have pulled off the shock, the Chiefs’ 23-straight winning run would have been broken when leading by 10 points or more going into the fourth quarter.
“You simply have to live with the call at this point,” Likely remarked. “You have to look on, clearly see where we can get better to not put ourselves in the situation to leave it in the refs’ hands to be able to call that.”
The reversal of the touchdown startled Ravens middle linebacker Roquan Smith.
“I didn’t think it was enough proof to turn it around,” Smith remarked. “But I feel like that will be something the refs will have to deal with whenever that time comes and that’s out of our control.”Editor’s Notes
