As Christmas approaches, last-minute errands are inevitable, whether it’s picking up a final gift or grabbing that one last ingredient for your holiday dinner. However, it’s essential to plan ahead, as many businesses and services will have altered schedules or be closed for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Here’s a comprehensive list of what’s open and closed during the 2024 holiday season.
Grocery Stores
If you’re running out of holiday supplies, many grocery stores will have reduced hours on Christmas Eve.
- Albertsons Companies, including brands like Safeway, Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, and Vons, will be open on Christmas Eve with shortened hours. However, many of their stores will be closed on Christmas Day, with some exceptions. It’s best to check with your local store before heading out.
- Kroger stores will mostly follow normal hours on Christmas Eve but will be closed on Christmas Day. This includes stores like Ralphs, King Soopers, Smith’s, and more.
- Whole Foods, Aldi, and Trader Joe’s will also operate on modified hours on Christmas Eve and be closed on Christmas Day.
- Costco will be closed on Christmas Day. Sam’s Club will close at 6 pm on Christmas Eve and remain closed the following day.
Retail Stores
If you need to pick up a last-minute gift, retail stores will have limited hours:
- Walmart stores will close at 6 pm on Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day.
- Target will open from 7 am to 8 pm on Christmas Eve but will remain closed on Christmas.
- Home Depot locations will generally close by 5 pm on Christmas Eve and be closed on Christmas Day, but it’s advisable to check with your local store.
- Lowe’s will be open as usual on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
- Macy’s will be open from 8 am to 7 pm on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
- Kohl’s will be open from 7 am to 7 pm on Christmas Eve and will close on Christmas.
- Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack will have limited hours on Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day.
Financial Centers
If you need to take care of financial tasks, keep in mind that most banks follow Federal Reserve holidays:
- Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and TD Bank will be closed on Christmas Day. Wells Fargo will close early at noon on Christmas Eve.

- On Christmas Eve, FedEx Express and FedEx Office will operate on modified hours, but other services, including FedEx Ground, will be available as usual. FedEx will not operate on Christmas Day, except for Custom Critical services.
- UPS will operate as usual on Christmas Eve. However, only limited UPS Store locations will be open on Christmas Day, and only UPS Express Critical services will be available.
