Those departing Boston Logan Airport will need to find alternate routes because the Sumner Tunnel will be closed for a month.
The tunnel is closed for renovations until August 5. It typically transports traffic beneath Boston Harbor and connects East Boston, Logan Airport, and downtown Boston.
However, the Chelsea Police Department emphasized that there are incorrect ways to escape traffic.
“Chelsea is not a cut-through! Expect lengthy delays, angry honks, and possibly a traffic gridlock to rival your worst nightmare,” the department wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Save yourself the trouble and find an alternate route!”

East Boston to downtown:
Drivers from East Boston heading downtown will be redirected to I-90/Ted Williams Tunnel via Bennington Street and then onto I-93.

The airport to downtown:
Drivers departing Boston Logan Airport for the Downtown Boston region will be redirected to I-90/Ted Williams Tunnel and then I-93.
The airport to I-93 North:
Drivers departing Boston Logan Airport for I-93 North should first take Route 1A North signage to Bell Circle Rotary. Then they’ll follow Route 16 to Route 1 south, then cross Route 1/Tobin Bridge and follow the signs to Rutherford Avenue. Finally, cars will pass past Sullivan Square and onto Interstate 93 North.
Revere to downtown:
Drivers on Route 1 southbound towards downtown are being directed to Route 1A in Revere at the Bell Circle Rotary. Once on Route 1A, cars will be redirected to I-90/Ted Williams Tunnel and then I-93.
Route 145 exit closed:
MassDOT advises that if the Route 145 (Bennington Street) exit is closed, take the local East Boston detour. “Message boards and signs near the entrance of the Ted Williams Tunnel will guide residents through the route,” according to its official website.
